Sleep apnea is a serious medical condition that can progressively worsen and impact your overall health and well-being. Sleep apnea can lead to an increased risk of:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular Disease

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition caused by soft tissue collapsing at the back of the mouth causing a blockage of the airway.  This occurs repeatedly during sleep causing the body to be deprived of the proper flow of oxygen. As a result, patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea often wake many times during the night gasping for air.

If you have not yet been diagnosed with sleep apnea, but suspect you may have sleep apnea, it is important to undergo a sleep study test. Many patients go undiagnosed for far too long allowing sleep apnea to effect their quality of life and even potentially their health. There are common risk factors and symptoms to be aware of. If any of the below apply to you, contact Dr. Levey so that he can coordinate with your physician to schedule a sleep apnea test.

Signs & Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

  • Feeling groggy or sleepy during the day
  • Dry mouth in the morning
  • Snoring
  • Headaches in the morning
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Restless sleep, sudden waking

Oral Sleep Appliance

Dr. Levey provides oral sleep appliances as an alternative to the CPAP machine. With oral appliance therapy patients with mild to moderate OSA are able to sleep better and prevent the side effects of the disorder. Oral appliance therapy is similar to a sports mouthguard. Made from a comfortable soft plastic the sleep device is custom fit to reposition the jaw. The oral appliance prevents the collapse of soft tissue at the back of the throat preventing obstructive sleep apnea.
