Dental Implants

The dental treatment options for replacing missing or crooked teeth have advanced in recent years with results that are nearly indistinguishable from natural teeth from dental implants. Exceptionally trained and experienced in restorative dentistry, Dr. Scott Schwartz places dental implants for patients with missing teeth or to secure a poor-fitting denture.

Dental implants have dramatically changed the landscape of restorative dentistry, letting Dr. Schwartz in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, give dental patients back a smile that looks, feels, and functions much like their natural smile did prior to tooth loss.

Dr. Schwartz will evaluate your dental health and talk about your personal goals during a consultation to determine that you are a good candidate for dental implants. Our dental implants in Croton-on-Hudson, NY services offer patients a way to enjoy natural-looking tooth replacements that can withstand for decades with proper oral care.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Durability and Longevity. Studies show that dental implants have a 10-year survival rate of 90-95%, making them a long-term solution for tooth loss. With proper care, they become a cost-effective option that will last you a long time.
  • Natural Look and Feel. Implants can appear and feel like natural teeth, seamlessly blending with your beautiful smile.
  • Improved Oral Health. Far from bridges, quality dental implants do not need to alter your nearby teeth, preserving your natural tooth structure. Also, when you replace a lost tooth with an implant, you fill the gap left by that tooth’s root. This means your jawbone will not deteriorate and lose its density over time.
  • Enhanced Comfort. After dental professionals have successfully integrated the dental implants into your jawbone, dental implants are stable and comfortable without the inconvenience of removable dentures.
  • Better Speech. Ill-fitting dentures can fall off within the mouth, causing slurred speech. Fortunately, dental implants eliminate this issue and allow you to speak clearly.
  • Easier Eating. With the stability that dental implants provide, you can enjoy your food without discomfort or pain.
  • Prevent Sunken Face Due to Missing Teeth. When teeth are missing, your face can have a sunken or hollow appearance. Luckily, dental implants can preserve the natural shape of your face and prevent your face from having that sunken shape.

The Process of Getting Dental Implants

1. Dental Consultation and Examination

The dental implant treatment starts with a consultation with our dental professional, Dr. Schwartz. During this visit, he will perform an oral examination and may use dental X-rays or 3D images to assess the condition and structure of your jawbone and teeth. This stage may also include reviewing your medical history, as some conditions can affect your eligibility for dental implants.

2. Treatment Planning

Based on the results of your consultation, our experienced dentist will craft a personalized treatment plan. The plan will consider factors such as the number of teeth you need to replace and the condition of your jawbone.

For instance, you may need tooth extractions if you have severely damaged or decayed teeth. If your jawbone is not strong enough to support implants, bone grafting may be necessary.

3. Additional Procedures (if Necessary)

As mentioned, our dentist will perform additional procedures if necessary. For weak jawbones, bone grafting will be done as an additional procedure. It is the process of transplanting bone tissue to your jawbone to create a more robust foundation for the dental implant. The bone used is either taken from another part of your body or can be synthetic. Take note the grafting process requires several months for the graft to grow enough new, strong bone to support the dental implant.

4. Implant Placement

Once your jawbone is strong enough, our cosmetic dentist will proceed with the implant placement. He will make an incision in your gum to expose the bone, drill a hole into the bone, and insert the titanium implant. This implant will serve as a new root for your artificial tooth.

After he inserts the implant, you will need to wait several months for the area to heal and for the implant to amalgamate with the bone, a process known as osseointegration.

5. Abutment Placement

After osseointegration, Dr. Schwartz places an abutment on the implant to hold the new tooth. He will reopen your gum to expose the dental implant, attach the abutment to it, and then close the gum tissue around but not over the abutment. Some patients may have the abutment put in during the implant surgery.

6. Impression Making

After your gum has healed around the abutment, he will take an indentation of your mouth. He will use this impression to make artificial teeth or crowns. During this time, Dr. Schwartz may place a temporary crown on the abutment.

7. Replacement Teeth Placement

The last phase of the dental implant process is the placement of the replacement teeth. These can either be crowns, dentures, or bridges. Once it is ready, our dedicated dentist will attach it to the abutments, and you finally have your bright, healthy smile.
