A Trip to the Office Could Be the Best Thing for Your Heart!New Research Finds Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke Linked to Periodontal Disease Croton-on-Hudson, NY(January 2006) If you're still searching for that perfect gift for Valentine's Day, you may want to consider taking your special someone to the dentist for a checkup! Researchers have recently discovered that you may be at an increased risk of development coronary heart disease and stroke if you suffer from periodontal disease. Bard J. Levey of Scarsdale, owner of Bard J. Levey's Smile Design studio in Croton-on-Hudson, stresses the importance of regular dental checkups that can help to prevent periodontal disease, an infection of the teeth, gums, ligaments and bone surrounding the teeth. "Gums that become infected with periodontal disease can be breeding grounds for disease-causing bacteria," said Dr. Levey. "Recent research has linked these bacteria to the formation of blood clots that can block arteries." The bacteria accumulate on the root surfaces of the teeth, causing pockets of infection. The bacteria then multiply in these pockets, resulting in tender, red, swollen gums that bleed with brushing or flossing. Bleeding gums can often create an opening allowing the harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream, causing clots and in some cases, triggering a heat attack. In addition, the clots can also cause fatty substances to build up in neck arteries. If these fat deposits break apart and are carried away in the bloodstream, they can lodge in the brain, block a vessel and cause a stroke. In people who already suffer from any type of heart problem, the bacterial infection could be fatal. "Preventing periodontal disease is vital to your overall health, and it can be very simple to do," added Dr. Levey. "Brush and floss your teeth daily, and visit your dentist every six months for professional cleaning." In the event that a patient is diagnosed with periodontal disease, there are therapies and medications available for treatment. However, as with all chronic infections, it is important to catch it in the early stages before any permanent damage is done. Have a great day! Dr. Bard J. Levey |
